The
purpose of any shock absorber is to stop a moving load with minimum load
rebound. Adjustable shock absorber too is designed to serve the same
purpose. The general principle on which shock absorber works is that it
convert the kinetic energy of a load into heat. The heat so generated gets
dissipated into the atmosphere.
Shock absorber comes in different types of designs and types like single
tube design, dual tube design, gas based shock absorber etc. There are two
other types that are used widely - fixed-orifice, and adjustable-orifice
type.
These are designed in such a way that they can bear a range of loads - as
much as 30 times the range of a non-adjustable type. Graduated dial on the
outside of the shock absorber is used to adjust them. The dial moves a ring
around the orifices which results in the controlling the size of the
openings. The deceleration rate is controlled by controlling the amount of
fluid forced through the orifices. The graduated dial is calibrated on a
scale from 1 to 10 and rotates through 90° or 180°. Higher number
denotes the greater the resistance to impact.

includes both high and low shaft speed adjustment. There is a canister where
both the high and low speed adjustment is located whereas the rebound
adjustment is located on the shaft. The seal, materials and the spring are
